About me

Valentina Sokolskaya

I was born in Saint-Petersburg (then Leningrad), Russia. I started to use our family camera when I was 13 and I have been playing with cameras ever since. I started with the film camera and spent lots of time in the dark room in our bathroom. I switched to digital in 2005.

Long ago I noticed that I’m looking at the world around me as if through a viewfinder seeking that perfect shot. I’m fascinated with the beauty of the world around me from gorgeous landscapes to simple flowers in my backyard. The texture of a petal may evoke as much emotion as a mountain.

My specialty is travel photography. It provides me with memories of my trips around the world, and also serves as endless source of artistic inspiration. Travels give me a chance to experience and capture the variety of colors, shapes and textures from diverse cultures and remote places.

I am also fascinated with the reflections both in the glass and in the water surface. It creates another world to admire. I’m working on the “Reflections” project.

I am a member of the Photographic Society of America and participate in several of its digital study groups. I have exhibited in juried photography exhibitions, including the Wilmington International Exhibition, Westchester International Exhibition, and Oklahoma International Exhibition, as well as a number of juried shows in Philadelphia area, at venues such as Tyme Gallery, SPP Galleries, Gladwyne Library; I also participated in the photo shows in Delaware Horticultural Society, Great Frame Up, CREC and Paoli Cancer Center. I belong to the Delaware County Camera Club, where I won 2 year-end awards in the 2013 monthly photo competitions. I enjoy learning from the other photographers of this club.

I live with my husband who shares my passion in photography. We have two kids who are out of college now. Being empty nesters we hope to spend more time with our cameras.
